What is Range Rover?

The "Range Rover" family came about in the 1950s as an offshoot of Land Rover, consisting of four unique models being the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque. In this article, we will look at how Range Rover came to be and the many different iterations the brand has gone through over the years. We are carverse, the used car supermarket based in Knebworth, Hertfordshire

Range Rover initially started with the Series Land Rover. It had interiors designed for practical use, coming with a hose-able floor and vinyl seats. The Range Rover came along in the 1950s, following worries that the Series Land Rover’s success would be short-lived, and set out to broaden its appeal. With the original 80-inch Station Wagon proving too expensive to build and not selling, Range Rover tried again in 1951. This time, they tried to recapture the rugged feel of the Series cars, while basing it on the two-wheel-drive P4 chassis. This combination of high-riding estate car with long travel suspension, with some additional off-road capability eventually became the basis for every crossover since then.

The first Range Rover

Following this, in 1966, Rover engineers Charles King and Gordon Bashford began to develop the Range Rover formula that we are familiar with today. The first-generation Range Rover, a.k.a. the Range Rover Classic, was released with the permanent four-wheel drive, split tailgate and clamshell hood.

Range Rover over the Years

Since then, the Range Rover has gone through several changes. In 1980, the first five-door model was released, useful for those who needed to load and unload very quickly. Other features like automatic transmission were announced before the launch of the second-generation Range Rover model in 1995. The second generation Range Rover was released in 1995, with an upgrade in comfort: with air suspension and leather seats, it paved the way towards luxury that also maintained its practicality. It was also the first Range Rover to include a satellite navigation system and infotainment system. In 2002 the third generation Range Rover released and moved even further towards its current luxurious status with the launch of its third generation vehicle (L322), which only offered automatic transmission from then on, with a full-time four-wheel-drive drivetrain system incorporating the BMW M62 V8 engine. Its interior also contained a button-operated control panel which was specifically designed to be within the driver’s reach. The release of the Range Rover Sport took place three years after, in 2005. It had a similar build to that of the Land Rover Discovery 3, Land Rover's other SUV which launched the previous year, with a dramatic exterior like the earlier Range Stormer, and an interior designed to seat around four people. Most recently in 2012, the fourth-generation Range Rover was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. Despite being built slightly larger, the aluminum frame allowed the fourth generation Range Rover to be lighter than ever, incorporating Land Rover’s Active Dynamics system, handling even more responsively, and boasting the latest in touch-screen technology. It stands out from other Range Rover generations with its wide wheelbase and floating roof.

Range Rover Family

Land Rover Range Rover

This is the original flagship full-size luxury SUV. It comes in either standard or long-wheelbase versions and has the option to have a third row of seats. You can get either inline-six engines or V8 powertrains, and now a six-cylinder PHEV has also entered the market as of 2023.

Range Rover Sport

This Range Rover model is the smaller and sportier sibling to the flagship Range Rover, with an all-new model that came out in 2023. The new Range Rover Sport can come in a variety of models, engines, and specifications, and then your choice of paints, wheels, and interior options.

Range Rover Velar

This is Range Rover's premium luxury compact crossover which debuted in 2017, coming in one four and two six-cylinder versions. The Range Rover Velar became known for its distinct design language which originally started with the Evoque: which focuses more on sleek lines, on-road ability, and sportiness, including on details such as the recessed door handles. It has a lower seating position than any Land Rover model before it, being more driver-focused.

Range Rover Evoque

The Range Rover Evoque is the most affordable and smallest of the Land Rover models that carry the Range Rover branding. Originally the Evoque came about as a development of the Land Rover LRX concept vehicle. The first-generation Evoque was produced from 2011-2018, and the second-generation version went into production in 2018.

Options for financing used Range Rover vehicles at Carverse used car supermarket

If you decide to buy a used Range Rover from Carverse used car supermarket, you are able to finance it in several ways. Our options are outlined as follows:

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) - If you plan to change cars frequently, PCP could be an excellent option if you intend to trade in your used Range Rover car for one of our other used automobiles. This option functions similarly to a loan in that you pay in installments over an agreed-upon number of months rather than paying for the car in full upfront. When this arrangement expires, you can either return the car, become the legal owner of a used Range Rover, or part exchange your used Range Rover car for another vehicle.

Hire Purchase (HP) - If you've decided that you want to acquire a used Range Rover car before the conclusion of your agreement, HP might be the best way to go. This technique allows you to pay in monthly installments, and the credit allows you to acquire a used Range Rover car at the end of the agreement and pay off the balance over 1 to 5 years. When this agreement comes to an end, you will be the legal owner of a used Range Rover car.
