What is a coupe car?

Coupe derives from the French verb ‘couper’ which means “to cut”. When this term is used in reference to a car, this literally means the car has been ‘cut’ or made shorter than standard. The simple definition of a coupe is a car with 2 doors with a sloping roof. Traditionally coupes have two doors, four seats, and no access to the boot from the cabin, however, in recent years there has been a slight compromise with the overall design to try and accommodate for these minor impracticalities; such as 4 door variants. Coupes are ideal for people who want a car that will turn heads, and who aren’t too concerned about the lack of interior practicality. They aren’t the most practical type of car on the market, but that’s part of their appeal. If you find yourself not needing a huge amount of space or people, why not consider a sleeker, sportier-looking car?

More about coupes

As coupes became more popular Automotive Engineers decided to try and clear up the definition of a coupe. According to these engineers, a coupe must have less than 33 cubic feet of space in the rear compartment. This was conflicted by the simple fact of whether the manufacturer called a model a coupe or not, which seemed to be more influential to the general public.

Types of coupes

The traditional values of a coupe have been put aside in recent years to try and accommodate modern ‘wants’ such as space. The recent change in market needs has meant manufacturers have had to provide a number of options to their coupe customers. You can still get the traditional two-door, small boot, and good performance coupes, but the modern take on the coupe has created models with bigger boots and four doors. Some examples of popular coupes include BWM 4 Series, Audi TT, Audi A5, and Volkswagen Scirocco.

Coupe: A simple definition of a coupe is generalised to a fixed-roof, four seats, two-door car, with a short than a standard body.

Four-Door Coupe: Taking the typical coupe but adding the convenience of two rear doors. We saw models such as the Mazda RX-8 which featured untraditional rear-opening rear doors.

Coupe SUV or Coupe SUV Crossover: As simple as it sounds – take a coupe and add elements from an SUV and there you have it. A stylish and sleek-looking coupe, with great handling, and practicality in the shape of some additional height and interior cabin space.

Is a Coupe right for you?

You really need to consider what you want from a car before choosing which body shape will suit your lifestyle the best. Generally speaking, coupes are built to provide a sporty and fun driving experience. The obvious downside of a coupe is less interior space, accessibility, and versatility, but don’t let that put you off owning one. Coupes are among the best cars to drive without going all the way to a typical two-seater sports car and provide great ownership reviews. If still aren’t sold on buying a coupe, then test drive one and experience the fun.
